Offsetflexo

Offsetflexo is a term used in the printing industry to describe a hybrid approach that combines elements of offset lithography and flexography on a single production line or workflow. The concept aims to merge offset's high-resolution image reproduction with flexography's ability to print on a wide range of substrates and to apply solids, coatings, or special effects quickly.

In practice, offsetflexo systems may employ a press equipped with one or more offset lithography units to render halftones and intricate imagery, followed by flexographic units that apply solid color areas, varnishes, or decorative effects. Some configurations integrate both plate technologies on a common framework with shared inking and drying systems, often using UV-curable or water-based inks and rapid inline drying or curing to maintain production speed. Substrates commonly include packaging papers, cartonboard, labels, as well as certain films.

Applications span packaging and labeling where high image fidelity is needed alongside versatile surface finishing. This includes folding cartons, carton sleeves, and composite packaging where quick changeovers and efficient ink utilization are advantageous.

Advantages of offsetflexo include improved image quality and color fidelity relative to pure flexo, potential process consolidation, and the ability to add coatings or effects in-line. Limitations involve higher capital and operational complexity, stricter registration control across two technologies, substrate compatibility considerations, and ongoing maintenance. The concept remains niche and evolving, with various manufacturers pursuing hybrid presses or upgrade paths rather than a single standardized standard.
