Octopath

Octopath is most commonly associated with Octopath Traveler, a role-playing video game developed by Acquire and published by Square Enix. Released initially on the Nintendo Switch in 2018, the title was later brought to additional platforms. The name reflects the game’s design around eight protagonists whose journeys intertwine in the world of Orsterra.

In gameplay terms, Octopath Traveler presents eight separate stories, each centered on a different traveler. Players choose one character to begin, then gradually uncover that character’s chapters while simultaneously discovering the paths of the other seven. The game emphasizes a non-linear progression: players can tackle chapters in various orders, and completing certain stories unlocks new content and party dynamics. The visual presentation uses a modern interpretation of classic 16-bit sprites rendered in a high-definition, isometric style described as HD-2D. The combat system is turn-based and incorporates a Boost mechanic that fuels stronger moves, along with a job or class system that allows players to customize each traveler’s abilities.

The eight travelers are Ophilia, Olberic, Primrose, Tressa, Therion, Alfyn, Cyrus, and H’aanit, each hailing from different backgrounds and regions within Orsterra. Their paths cross through shared events and independent missions, creating a tapestry of interwoven stories rather than a single linear narrative.

Legacy and related titles: Octopath Traveler was followed by updates and expanded content, and a sequel, Octopath Traveler II, was released in 2023, continuing the concept of multiple protagonists and branchable storytelling within a new setting.
