Ochnaceae

Ochnaceae is a family of flowering plants in the order Malpighiales. The group comprises trees, shrubs, and climbing plants found in tropical and subtropical regions, with the greatest diversity in the tropics of Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

Leaves are generally simple and alternate, often evergreen, and may bear stipules at the base. Leaf shapes range from elliptical to oblong, with margins that are usually entire but may be finely serrate. Flowers are usually small and can be bisexual or unisexual, typically arranged in inflorescences. The perianth commonly has four to five petals and four to five sepals, and the many stamens give a conspicuous reproductive structure. Petal color spans yellows and oranges, with whites in some taxa. Some genera produce resins or latex-like exudates.

Taxonomically, Ochnaceae has undergone revision in light of molecular data, leading to changes in circumscription and relationships within the family. The type genus is Ochna, and the group includes several other genera such as Sauvagesia and Luxemburgia, though the exact composition varies among classifications. The family is sometimes treated with subfamilies or in broader senses in older literature.

Ecology and distribution: Members occupy a variety of habitats, including forest edges, understory, and open woodlands, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. They show diverse growth forms, from small shrubs to large trees, and can have wide ecological tolerances depending on the genus and species.

Uses and conservation: Some species are grown ornamentally for their flowers. In certain regions, parts of Ochnaceae species have traditional medicinal uses, though such uses are not widespread. Habitat loss and localized overcollection threaten particular species, and several taxa are considered at risk in regional assessments.
