Obstholz

Obstholz is the wood obtained from fruit-bearing trees, such as apple, pear, plum and other members of fruit trees. In English, the term fruitwood describes timber derived from orchard trees rather than from traditional timber species grown specifically for lumber. The wood is typically light to medium in color, with a fine to medium grain, and it generally offers good workability. It machines well, takes finishes smoothly, and can be polished to a pleasing luster. Proper drying and seasoning are important, as some fruitwoods are prone to warping or checking when not adequately seasoned.

Properties vary by species. Pear and apple woods are often noted for a pleasant aroma when worked and a relatively fine texture, while cherry can darken with exposure to light and acquire a warmer, reddish tone over time. Fruitwoods are usually softer than many commercial hardwoods, which affects their suitability for heavy structural work but makes them favorable for turning, carving, and detailed joinery.

Uses encompass turned objects, small furniture components, tool handles, kitchen utensils, and decorative or hobby woodturning pieces. They are also used for veneers and inlay where distinctive grain and color are desired. Because many orchard trees are pruned or culled, obstholz can be sourced as a by-product of fruit production, contributing to sustainable material use in crafts and small-scale woodworking.
