Næsebor

Næsebor (nasal seborrhea) is a term used to describe oily, sebaceous skin or crusting in the nasal region, often occurring as part of a broader seborrheic or acneiform presentation. It is not a distinct disease on its own but rather a manifestation of sebaceous gland activity or related skin conditions affecting the nose.

Causes and context commonly include hormonal influences that increase sebum production, climatic factors such as humidity or irritants, and skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis or acne. The yeast Malassezia, linked to seborrheic dermatitis, may contribute to inflammation and flaking in the nasal area.

Symptoms typically include a shiny or greasy appearance of the skin on the nose, with possible flaking, crusting, redness, and in some cases minor pimples or blackheads around the nasal folds. Diagnosis is usually clinical, based on appearance and history; other conditions such as acne, rosacea, contact dermatitis, or infections may be considered if the presentation is atypical.

Treatment focuses on gentle skin care and reducing excess oil while avoiding irritation. Regular use of mild cleansers, non-irritating moisturizers, and non-comedogenic products can help. Over-the-counter options such as products containing salicylic acid or azelaic acid may reduce oiliness and improve texture. If seborrheic dermatitis is present, antifungal or anti‑inflammatory topical therapies (for example, ketoconazole or zinc pyrithione preparations) can be effective, sometimes with short courses of low-potency topical corticosteroids under medical supervision. In persistent or severe cases, a dermatologist may adjust treatment or explore alternative therapies.

Prognosis varies; with consistent skincare and appropriate topical therapy, symptoms often improve, though underlying sebaceous activity may persist.
