Näppäintilojen, a Finnish term, translates to "key modes" or "key states" in English. It refers to specific configurations or functionalities of a keyboard that alter the behavior of its keys. These modes are often activated by special keys such as Function (Fn), Control (Ctrl), Alt, or Shift, or combinations thereof.

One common example of a näppäintila is the Caps Lock mode, which makes all alphabetic characters uppercase. Another is the Num Lock mode, which typically enables a dedicated numeric keypad section on the keyboard, allowing for faster number input. The Scroll Lock key, though less commonly used today, historically altered the behavior of the arrow keys, causing the screen to scroll rather than the cursor to move.

Without pressing Fn, these secondary functions are inactive.
