Nyújthatóságát, often translated as stretchability or extensibility, refers to a material's ability to deform significantly under tensile stress before fracturing. This property is a crucial aspect of a material's mechanical behavior and is particularly important in applications where deformation is expected or desired. Materials with high nyújthatóságát can undergo considerable elongation without breaking.

This property is closely related to ductility and toughness. Ductility specifically refers to the ability of a material to deform plastically under tensile stress. Toughness, on the other hand, is the ability of a material to absorb energy and deform plastically before fracturing, encompassing both strength and ductility. Nyújthatóságát is often quantified by the percentage elongation at break, measured during a tensile test.

The molecular structure and bonding within a material significantly influence its nyújthatóságát. For instance, metals, with their metallic bonds and ability to deform through dislocation movement, generally exhibit high nyújthatóságát. Polymers, depending on their chain structure and cross-linking, can also show considerable stretchability. Ceramics, typically characterized by strong covalent or ionic bonds, are generally brittle and have very low nyújthatóságát.
