The term is a neologism coined by practitioners in the early 2010s, notably within the Nutikateks Collective, a loose network of designers and craft educators. It has since appeared in craft magazines, workshop syllabi, and online tutorials, though formal encyclopedic documentation remains limited.

Techniques involve combining structural knots—such as lanyard knots, spiral knots, and square knots—with fabric weaves, cords, and threads, often using detachable cores or modular elements. Materials include cotton cord, jute, hemp, nylon, and experimental fibers. Finishing may include sealing, dyeing, or integrating into garments, accessories, or sculptural forms.
