Nurmenleikkuujäte, translated as grass mowing waste, refers to the material generated when mowing lawns, parks, and other grassy spaces. It mainly consists of fresh grass clippings and small amounts of herbaceous plant debris. When collected, it is typically managed as green waste or reused through composting, mulching, or energy recovery, depending on local waste systems.

Characteristics and composition: Fresh clippings are high in moisture and nitrogen, with relatively low dry matter. They decompose quickly and can return nutrients to the soil when left in appropriate amounts. If large quantities accumulate or are matted, they can form thatch, reduce air and water penetration, and invite pests and diseases.

Management approaches: Mulch mowing returns clippings to the lawn and reduces the need for additional fertilizer. If clippings are collected, they can be composted or used as mulch around trees and ornamentals. In some areas, green-waste collections or anaerobic digestion facilities accept nurmenleikkuujäte for processing into compost or biogas, respectively; avoid disposing in regular trash where prohibited.

Environmental and practical considerations: Returning clippings to the lawn is common practice and supports sustainable maintenance by recycling nutrients and conserving moisture.
