Nowotwórczy is a Polish adjective describing substances, exposures, or processes that can cause cancer. In scientific and public health contexts, it denotes a potential to initiate or promote the development of tumors, often after long latency periods. The term is used for chemical agents, physical factors like radiation, biological agents, as well as lifestyle and environmental influences that raise the risk of cancer.

Assessment of nowotworczy potencjał is typically conducted by international and national health organizations. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies agents into groups: Group 1 (carcinogenic to humans), Group 2A (probably carcinogenic to humans), Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans), Group 3 (not classifiable), and Group 4 (probably not carcinogenic). A substance may be deemed nowotwórczy even when the mechanism is not fully understood, as long as there is sufficient evidence linking exposure to cancer in humans or animals. The classification reflects hazard, not absolute risk for individuals, which depends on dose, duration, and individual susceptibility.

Examples commonly considered nowotworczy include tobacco smoke and secondhand smoke, ultraviolet radiation, asbestos, benzene, formaldehyde, certain aflatoxins, and processed meats in high amounts. Recognizing these factors supports public health actions such as exposure limits, labeling, regulatory controls, and prevention campaigns. The term also appears in occupational safety, environmental health, and clinical guidance, where it informs risk communication and mitigation strategies. While a factor may be nowotworczy, actual cancer risk varies with context and exposure.
