Nokkosihottumaan

Nokkosihottuma, also known as nummular eczema or discoid eczema, is a common inflammatory skin condition characterized by round or oval patches of eczema that are often itchy and inflamed. These patches typically appear as well-defined, coin-shaped plaques that can range from a few millimeters to several centimeters in diameter.

The exact cause of nokkosihottuma is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and immune system factors. It may be triggered by skin irritation, allergies, dry skin, or exposure to irritants such as soaps and chemicals. Stress and climate changes, especially cold and dry weather, can also exacerbate the condition.

Clinically, nokkosihottuma manifests as round, red, or pink patches with a scaly or crusted surface. These lesions may be accompanied by significant itching, which can lead to scratching and secondary infections. The affected areas are most commonly found on the limbs, trunk, and hands but can occur anywhere on the body.

Diagnosis is primarily based on clinical examination, with differential diagnoses including other forms of eczema, fungal infections, or psoriasis. Treatment strategies aim to reduce inflammation, alleviate itching, and prevent secondary infections. Topical corticosteroids are commonly prescribed, along with moisturizers to restore skin barrier function. In some cases, antihistamines and other immune-modulating medications may be used.

While nokkosihottuma often resolves with appropriate treatment, relapses are common. Managing triggers and maintaining skin hydration are key to controlling flare-ups. The condition generally has a favorable prognosis with proper skincare and medical management.
