Noetherska is a fictional language created by linguist and polyglot Richard S. Kaye as part of his experimental linguistic projects. The language is designed to be a constructed language (conlang) that adheres to strict grammatical rules while incorporating elements from various natural languages, particularly those with agglutinative or fusional structures. Kaye introduced Noetherska in 2010 as a thought experiment to explore how language acquisition and processing might differ under hypothetical linguistic conditions.

Noetherska is notable for its highly regular and systematic grammar, which contrasts with the irregularities often found in natural languages. Its vocabulary is largely derived from English, but words are systematically modified to fit the language’s phonological and morphological patterns. The language features a complex system of affixes, including prefixes, suffixes, and infixes, which convey grammatical meaning such as tense, mood, aspect, and case. This agglutinative approach allows for a high degree of expressiveness with relatively simple word forms.

One of the key features of Noetherska is its use of a modified version of the Latin alphabet, supplemented with diacritics to represent sounds not present in English. The language also incorporates a system of tonal distinctions, where pitch variations alter word meanings—a trait more commonly found in natural languages like Mandarin or Thai. Kaye’s goal was to demonstrate how such a language might function in a hypothetical linguistic community, emphasizing the role of context and learning strategies in overcoming its complexity.
