Kayes
Kayes is a city in western Mali, the capital of Kayes Region and the seat of Kayes Cercle. It is located on the Sénégal River near the border with Senegal, roughly 400 kilometers west of Bamako. The site has long been a trading post and a gateway between the Sahelian interior and the Atlantic coast. Established before the colonial era by Soninke and other groups, Kayes later grew as a colonial administrative center under French rule in the late 19th century and remains a regional political and commercial hub.
