Nighthowls is a term used to describe individuals who are most alert and productive during the late-night or early-morning hours. This phenomenon is often associated with a naturally later circadian rhythm, meaning their internal body clock is shifted compared to the typical societal schedule. While some individuals identify as "night owls" due to personal preference or lifestyle, scientific research suggests there can be a genetic component influencing chronotype, the biological predisposition to being either a morning person or a night person.

The concept of nighthowls is distinct from insomnia, which is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling or staying asleep. Nighthowls can typically sleep for a sufficient duration, but their peak activity period simply occurs outside conventional working or school hours. This can present challenges in societies structured around a diurnal (daytime) schedule, potentially impacting work performance, social engagement, and overall well-being for those whose natural rhythms do not align.

Adolescents and young adults, for example, often exhibit a natural shift towards a later sleep-wake cycle.
