Methods include on-site reporting, interviews, document retrieval, data collection, and beat monitoring for new developments.

Verification and ethics: verification is central and involves corroborating information through multiple independent sources and clearly attributing it. Journalists distinguish on the record, on background, and off the record. Ethical guidelines emphasize accuracy, fairness, independence, minimizing harm, avoiding conflicts of interest, and protecting sources when appropriate.

Safety, law, and access: news gathering can raise safety concerns and legal issues, especially in sensitive or dangerous environments. Journalists must respect privacy, avoid defamation, comply with applicable laws, and pursue information access rights where available. Transparency about methods and the issuance of corrections help maintain credibility.

Technology and practices: modern newsgathering uses mobile devices, audio/video recording, live streaming, data journalism tools, and sometimes drones, all of which raise ethical and legal considerations. Challenges include access restrictions, censorship, misinformation, resource constraints, and personal risk, all of which editors and reporters navigate through training and professional standards.
