There are several common methods for network expansion. One straightforward approach is to add more network interface controllers (NICs) to existing computers or servers, allowing them to connect to more devices. Another common technique is the deployment of additional networking hardware such as switches, routers, and access points. Switches can be used to create more ports within a local area network (LAN), while routers are essential for connecting different networks together and directing traffic. For larger-scale expansions, especially when connecting geographically dispersed locations, Wide Area Networks (WANs) are employed. This might involve using leased lines, fiber optic cables, or even satellite links. Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) can also be used to securely extend a private network over a public network like the internet, allowing remote users or sites to connect as if they were on the local network.
