Nestekidenäyttöteknologiaan, commonly known as LCD technology, refers to a type of flat panel display that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. These liquid crystals do not emit light themselves but rather either block or allow light to pass through. LCDs are found in a wide array of electronic devices, including televisions, computer monitors, smartphones, and digital watches.

The fundamental principle behind LCDs involves sandwiching a layer of liquid crystals between two polarized filters and electrodes. When an electric current is applied to the electrodes, the liquid crystals align themselves in a way that either twists or untwists the light passing through them. This change in alignment affects the polarization of the light, allowing it to pass through the second polarizer or be blocked, thereby creating pixels that are either lit or dark. Color is achieved by using a backlight, typically white LED, and a color filter. Each pixel is composed of sub-pixels for red, green, and blue, whose light intensity is controlled to produce the desired color.

Early LCDs were monochrome, but advancements in technology have led to sophisticated full-color displays with high resolutions and refresh rates. Key components include the liquid crystal material itself, thin-film transistors (TFTs) that control each pixel individually for faster response times and better image quality, and the backlight system. The development of IPS (In-Plane Switching) and VA (Vertical Alignment) technologies have further improved viewing angles and contrast ratios, making LCDs a dominant display technology for decades.
