Nauhajärjestelmiä, known in English as "belt systems" or "tape systems," refers to a class of technologies and methods used for data storage and retrieval. Historically, these systems utilized magnetic tape as the primary storage medium. Data was written sequentially onto a long, flexible strip of plastic coated with a magnetic material. To access specific data, the tape had to be physically wound to the correct position, making random access slower compared to other storage methods like hard disk drives.

The primary advantages of nauhajärjestelmiä were their high storage capacity and low cost per gigabyte, especially for large archives. This made them suitable for applications such as backups, long-term data archiving, and data retention where immediate access was not critical.
