Naticid

Naticid refers to members of the family Naticidae, commonly known as moon snails or moon shells. These marine gastropod mollusks are characterized by their globular or rounded shells, which often feature a smooth surface and a wide aperture. Naticids are primarily found in sandy or muddy substrates across tropical and temperate oceans worldwide.

Naticids are predatory snails that feed mainly on bivalves and other small mollusks. They use a specialized radula and enzymatic fluids to drill through the shells of their prey, creating a circular hole that allows access to the soft tissue inside. This drilling behavior is highly effective and is considered a hallmark trait of the family.

The shell morphology of naticids varies among species but generally exhibits a low spire and a large, rounded body whorl. The shells often have a distinct, polished appearance, which aids in camouflaging the snails within their sedimentary habitats. Their soft bodies extend slightly beyond the shell aperture, equipped with a muscular foot used for burrowing and movement.
