NGP

NGP stands for Next Generation Portable, the codename used by Sony for a handheld game console announced in 2011. The device was developed by Sony Computer Entertainment as a more powerful successor to the PlayStation Portable and was later released under the name PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). The NGP/PS Vita was designed to deliver console-like capabilities on a handheld form factor, including a high-quality display, multiple input methods, and strong connectivity options.

The hardware emphasized multimedia and interactivity. It featured dual analog sticks, a 5-inch touchscreen, front and rear touch panels, built-in microphones, and front and rear cameras. The console included six-axis motion sensing, wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi and optional 3G), Bluetooth, and memory storage via proprietary PS Vita cards. Its architecture combined a quad-core ARM processor with a dedicated graphics unit, supporting rich 3D games and high-definition textures for a handheld device. The PS Vita also supported physical PS Vita game cards and a digital storefront for downloadable titles, with additional features such as Remote Play with a PlayStation 3 and later PlayStation 4, cross-buy incentives, and access to PSP-era games through the PlayStation Network.

Naming and release occurred after the initial reveal. The device was unveiled as NGP at Sony’s PlayStation Meeting in January 2011 and subsequently rebranded as PlayStation Vita in 2011. It launched in Japan in 2011 and reached North America and Europe in early 2012. Despite positive reception of its hardware and software library, the PS Vita faced competition, high peripheral costs, and a challenging market, leading to diminishing sales and a production end announced several years later. The Vita remains a notable entry in Sony’s handheld history, influencing later portable and remote-play concepts within the PlayStation ecosystem.
