Mélymvelés

Mélymvelés is a Hungarian term that translates to "deep plowing" or "subsoiling" in English. It refers to a type of tillage operation that loosens and cultivates the soil at depths significantly greater than traditional plowing, typically ranging from 40 to 100 centimeters (16 to 40 inches). The primary goal of mélymvelés is to break up compacted soil layers, often referred to as hardpans, which can restrict root growth and water infiltration.

This practice is commonly employed in agricultural settings where soil compaction has become a significant issue due to heavy machinery, intensive cultivation, or natural soil conditions. By shattering these restrictive layers, mélymvelés improves soil structure, enhances aeration, and promotes better drainage. This, in turn, can lead to improved crop yields, increased water availability for plants, and reduced soil erosion.

Mélymvelés is usually performed with specialized equipment such as subsoilers or deep rippers, which are designed to penetrate the soil deeply without inverting or mixing the soil layers extensively. This method is often contrasted with conventional plowing, which typically operates at shallower depths and inverts the soil. While mélymvelés can be an effective tool for soil remediation, it is a more energy-intensive process and is generally undertaken only when significant compaction issues are present. The timing of mélymvelés is also important, often being carried out when the soil is relatively dry to achieve optimal fracturing.
