Mustism refers to the practice of intentionally avoiding or suppressing the use of the word "must," particularly in contexts where it might be perceived as overly prescriptive, rigid, or emotionally charged. This linguistic approach is often associated with mindfulness, nonviolent communication, and certain therapeutic practices aimed at reducing stress and fostering more flexible thinking.

The term gained visibility through discussions in psychology, self-help communities, and online forums, where it was proposed as a way to mitigate the psychological burden of absolute obligations. By replacing "must" with softer alternatives like "could," "might," or "prefer," individuals may experience less internal pressure and greater autonomy in decision-making. For example, instead of saying, "I must finish this task," one might reframe it as, "I could choose to finish this task if it aligns with my priorities."

Critics argue that mustism can sometimes lead to passive or indecisive behavior, as it may dilute the sense of urgency or necessity in certain situations. Supporters, however, emphasize its role in promoting self-compassion and reducing anxiety by shifting focus away from rigid expectations. The practice has been loosely tied to broader philosophical movements, such as Stoicism, which advocates for distinguishing between what one can control and what one cannot.
