Muottimuotoilu, often translated as mold design or mold making, is a crucial process in manufacturing, particularly for plastics, metals, and composites. It involves the creation of a hollow cavity, known as a mold, which is then used to shape a material. The mold is typically made from metal, such as steel or aluminum, and is designed to withstand high temperatures and pressures associated with the molding process.

The design phase of a mold is critical and requires a deep understanding of material properties, manufacturing processes, and product aesthetics. Engineers and designers must consider factors like draft angles for easy part ejection, gate locations for material flow, cooling channels for efficient solidification, and venting to release trapped air. The complexity of the mold design often dictates the cost and efficiency of the final product's manufacturing.

Once designed, the mold is manufactured using precision machining techniques like CNC milling and electrical discharge machining (EDM). The resulting mold is then used in conjunction with a molding machine, such as an injection molding machine or a die-casting machine. The molten material is injected or poured into the mold cavity, where it cools and solidifies into the desired shape. After a set cooling period, the mold opens, and the finished part is ejected.
