Muotovaihe

The phase lies between concept and finishing and focuses on defining the object's primary form and dimensions.

The word is formed from muoto meaning form or shape and vaihe meaning phase. It is commonly used when a mold, pattern, or form tool is employed to create a part, including casting, slip casting in ceramics, plaster or gypsum, investment casting, concrete molding, and metal forming. In sculpture and prototyping, the muotovaihe may refer to the stage where a rough shape is generated before refinement.

Process characteristics in the muotovaihe include designing or selecting an appropriate mold or form, choosing suitable materials, and accounting for factors such as shrinkage, draft angles, and venting. Operators apply release agents as needed, pour or inject the material, and allow it to cure or set. After demolding, the piece typically undergoes finishing steps such as trimming, smoothing, or machining. Defects such as warping, air pockets, or dimensional inaccuracies can originate in the muotovaihe if the form work is inadequate or the process conditions are uncontrolled.
