Muldenkipper

Muldenkipper is a term used in German-speaking contexts for a vehicle designed to transport loose bulk materials in a tilting open container. In road transport, it refers to the dump truck or tipper with a hinged cargo bed (mulde) that can be raised to discharge its load. In rail transport, muldenkipper refers to a type of hopper wagon with a tilting container used to unload bulk materials such as coal, ore, or ballast.

Road muldenkipper typically consist of a steel or composite cargo bed mounted on a heavy-duty chassis, with a hydraulic or mechanical tipping mechanism. The bed tilts to unload its contents at the site, allowing rapid offloading without needing to reverse or reload. They are used in construction, mining, waste handling, and civil engineering, carrying loads ranging from several to several tens of tonnes depending on model and region.

Rail muldenkipper or hopper wagons have a protected body or trough with a discharge end or bottom outlet. They are built on bogies and may include hydraulic or gravity discharge. They are used for bulk materials such as coal, ore, aggregates or ballast. The wagon's frame length, axle configuration, and discharge geometry determine unloading rate and distance, and operations require loading and unloading facilities such as yards and chutes.

Modern muldenkipper designs emphasize safety, payload efficiency, and compatibility with standard railway or road interfaces.
