Mountainadapted
Mountainadapted (also written mountain-adapted) is an adjective used to describe organisms, populations, or ecosystems that have evolved to persist in mountainous environments. Mountainadapted traits help cope with high elevation, cold temperatures, rugged terrain, strong UV exposure, and variable resource availability. The term is used across biology, ecology, and anthropology to distinguish mountainadapted lineages from lowland relatives.
Biological mountainadaptation includes physiological, morphological, behavioral, and genetic changes. Physiologically, many populations show enhanced oxygen transport
Altitude creates heterogeneous habitats, so mountainadapted organisms often vary across elevations and ranges. Cushion plants, rosette
Research on mountainadapted biology informs conservation under climate change, which shifts elevational ranges and can threaten
