Cushion

A cushion is a soft padded item designed to provide comfort, support, or decoration. It is typically placed on seating, beds, floors, or vehicles. Cushions come in various shapes, including square, rectangular, round, and bolster shapes, and may be used individually or in sets.

Materials: Cushions are filled with natural fillings such as feathers, down, wool, or cotton fiber; synthetic fillings such as polyester fiberfill, memory foam, or microbeads; or a combination. The outer fabric can be cotton, linen, velvet, synthetic fabrics, leather, or other decorative textiles. Many cushions have removable covers secured with zippers or buttons for cleaning.

Types and uses: Seat cushions are designed to fit chairs or benches; throw cushions (scatter cushions) decorate sofas; lumbar cushions support the lower back; knee or comfort cushions are used for medical or ergonomic purposes; travel cushions provide neck or back support in transit; bolster cushions are cylindrical for arm or back support.

Care and maintenance: Covers may be removable and machine-washed or hand-washed according to care labels. Cushions with foam inserts may require occasional fluffing; spot-clean or dry cleaning may be recommended for certain fabrics.

History and notes: Cushions have ancient origins in many cultures, serving utilitarian and ceremonial purposes. In modern interiors, cushions are common decorative and functional elements that can influence room aesthetics and comfort. The term cushion can refer to both a padded seating pad and a smaller decorative pillow depending on regional usage.
