Motordrivlina

Motordrivlina is the Swedish term for the system in a motor vehicle that generates mechanical power and delivers it to the driving wheels. In automotive terminology, it is commonly referred to as the powertrain or drivetrain. The motordrivlina encompasses the energy source, the means of converting energy to rotational power, and the components that transmit torque to the wheels.

Core components include the propulsion source (an internal combustion engine, an electric motor, or both in hybrid configurations), the transmission or gearing, and the means of torque transfer such as a clutch or torque converter, driveshafts or axles, a differential, and the final drive to the wheels. In electric powertrains, other elements such as the inverter and, in some layouts, single- or multi-speed gearboxes are integral parts of the propulsion system. The energy storage system (fuel tank for ICEs or batteries for electric powertrains) is closely associated with the motordrivlina, providing the energy that is converted into motion.

Configurations vary by layout and drive arrangement. Vehicles may employ front-, mid-, or rear-engine placements and can be front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive. Some designs emphasize high efficiency or performance through advanced transmissions, electrified motors, or lightweight construction, while others prioritize robustness for heavy-duty use. The motordrivlina is a central factor in a vehicle’s efficiency, performance, drivability, and emissions, and it interacts with control systems that optimize torque delivery, gearing, and energy use across operating conditions.
