Motivecentric is a neologism describing an approach, perspective, or design principle that places motives—individual or collective reasons for action—at the center of analysis, decision-making, or organization. The term is used adjectivally (motivecentric approach) and nominally (a motivecentric framework) to signal that motivations are treated as primary explanatory variables rather than secondary or contextual factors.

Applications of a motivecentric orientation appear across disciplines. In psychology and psychotherapy it emphasizes understanding clients’ underlying motives to guide intervention. In criminology and law enforcement it refers to investigative strategies that prioritize motive reconstruction to inform leads and profiling. In business, marketing, and product design motivecentric strategies orient offerings and communications around users’ fundamental goals and drivers. In organizational management, motivecentric policies attempt to align institutional incentives with employees’ intrinsic and extrinsic motives.

Methodologically, motivecentric approaches often combine qualitative inquiry (interviews, narrative analysis) with quantitative measures of motivation (surveys, behavioral indicators) and may incorporate modeling of intent as a causal factor. Advocates argue it yields deeper explanation and better-targeted interventions by addressing why actions occur, not just what occurs.

Criticisms highlight risks of oversimplification, bias in inferring motives, and neglect of structural, contextual, or systemic influences. Ethical concerns arise when motive inference relies on intrusive data or leads to unjustified assumptions about actors’ intentions.
