Morvannand

Morvannand is a fictional town in the province of Valara, within the country of Elaria. It has an estimated population of 3,200 as of 2023 and covers about 12 square kilometers. The town lies in the Morva River valley.

The name Morvannand derives from the Morva river and the Morvannish word annand, meaning “valley by the river.”

Geographically, Morvannand consists of rolling farmland, deciduous woodland, and a sandstone escarpment that forms a backdrop to the valley. The Morva River runs through the center of the town, and temperate conditions favor agriculture.

The settlement began in the 11th century around a fortified manor. In the 13th century, Morvannand Castle was built and became a regional center. A market charter followed in the 17th century, spurring growth, and the arrival of the railway in the 19th century further expanded the town.

Morvannand is governed by a nine-member municipal council led by an elected mayor. It is part of the Valara intermunicipal district, sharing services such as policing and waste management with neighboring municipalities.

The local economy relies on agriculture (grain and apples), small-scale manufacturing, and tourism centered on the castle and historic streets. The population primarily speaks Morvannish; a minority uses Elarian as a second language.

Major sites include Morvannand Castle and St. Elinor's Church. An annual River Festival in late summer features markets, music, and boat parades. Local crafts include pottery and weaving.

Morvannand is connected by regional roads; the nearest rail link is 15 kilometers away. The town has a primary school; secondary students attend schools in nearby towns.

Historically notable residents include the 19th-century botanist Lira Morvan and the 20th-century poet Joren Vallis.
