Monterrey

Monterrey is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Nuevo León. It is located in the northeastern part of the country, at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental and along the Santa Catarina River, forming the core of the Monterrey Metropolitan Area.

The city is a major industrial and business center with a diversified economy that includes steel, cement, glass, automotive components, petrochemicals, finance, and services. It hosts numerous national and multinational companies and is an important educational hub, with institutions such as Tecnológico de Monterrey and the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León.

Founded in 1596 by Diego de Montemayor, Monterrey grew as a commercial and industrial center and developed into one of northern Mexico’s leading cities. Notable landmarks include the Macroplaza, Cerro de la Silla, Fundidora Park, the Santa Lucía riverwalk, and cultural venues such as MARCO and the Museo del Obispado.

The Monterrey Metropolitan Area is home to several million residents; the city proper has around one million inhabitants, while the wider metro area is in the low four millions.

Transportation options include the Metrorrey light-rail system and Monterrey International Airport (MTY). The city is also served by a network of highways and bus services.

Monterrey features a semi-arid climate with hot summers and mild winters. In sports, it is home to the football clubs CF Monterrey, known as Rayados, which play at Estadio BBVA.
