Monitavoitteellinen

Monitavoitteellinen is a Finnish term used to describe approaches, problems, or analyses that involve optimizing more than one objective or goal simultaneously. It is equivalent to the English term "multi-objective" and is commonly used in operations research, engineering, and decision analysis. In a monitavoitteellinen context, objectives may conflict, which requires trade-offs and consideration of preferences.

Key concepts include Pareto efficiency and the Pareto front. A solution is Pareto optimal if improving one objective would worsen at least one other; the Pareto front is the set of all Pareto-optimal solutions. Because perfect agreement among objectives is rare, decision-makers typically consider a set of alternatives and choose a satisfactory compromise rather than a single best solution.

Methods used in monitavoitteellinen optimization include scalarization (combining objectives into a single objective with weights or goal distances), Pareto-based approaches that seek diverse, non-dominated solutions, and evolutionary multiobjective optimization that uses population-based search to approximate the Pareto front.
