This group of fungi is primarily characterized by its small, often delicate mushrooms with thin caps and slender stems. The name "Molutellina" is derived from the genus *Moluccella*, a reference to the Moluccas (now known as the Maluku Islands), where some related species were first discovered.

Species within the genus Molutellina are typically found in temperate and tropical regions, often growing on wood or decaying plant material. They are saprotrophic, meaning they obtain nutrients by decomposing organic matter. The mushrooms usually have caps ranging from 0.5 to 2 centimeters in diameter, often with a smooth or slightly scaly surface, and gills that are closely spaced and often adnate (attached to the stem without a free edge). The stems are usually slender and may be hollow or solid.

One of the most well-known species in this genus is *Molutellina semisupina*, which is commonly found in Europe and North America. This species is characterized by its small, convex to flat cap, white to pale yellow gills, and a slender stem. It is often found growing in clusters on decaying wood or soil enriched with organic matter.

Molutellina species are generally not considered edible, and some may be toxic, so identification by an expert is recommended before consumption. They play an important ecological role in breaking down dead plant material, contributing to nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. Molecular studies have helped clarify the taxonomy of this genus, distinguishing it from similar-looking fungi such as those in the genera *Collybia* and *Marasmius*.
