Mitgliedschaft, or membership, is the formal affiliation of an individual or entity with a group, organization, or community. It is typically governed by a constitution, statutes, by-laws, or an agreement that sets out eligibility, rights, duties, and terms of participation. Membership confers access to benefits, services, or representation, while also imposing responsibilities such as adherence to rules and payment of dues.

Membership varies widely across contexts. It may be voluntary or automatic, open to anyone or restricted by criteria, and can be time-limited (annual, life) or perpetual. Some bodies distinguish categories such as regular, associate, honorary, student, or corporate memberships.

Rights and duties are commonly defined in the governing documents. Rights often include participation in decision-making, such as voting or standing for office; access to resources, services, or programs; and eligibility for certain benefits. Duties may include complying with organizational rules, paying dues, reporting conflicts of interest, and safeguarding confidential information.

Admission and termination follow established procedures. Entry usually requires an application or meeting eligibility criteria and approval by a governing body, possibly after a probationary period. Membership can be retained while in good standing or terminated for reasons such as resignation, expulsion for misconduct, non-payment of dues, or the dissolution of the organization.

Administration and impact: Membership records support administration, governance, and reporting. Privacy and data-protection considerations apply, particularly under applicable laws. Effective membership management helps sustain engagement, accountability, and the long-term viability of organizations.
