Miratype

Miratype is an open-source sans-serif typeface family designed for readability in both digital interfaces and print. Released by the Miratype Project in 2020, it comprises multiple weights, italic styles, and a variable font, and is distributed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Design characteristics include a geometric skeleton with humanist adjustments, a relatively high x-height, open counters, and generous spacing to support legibility at small sizes. The family emphasizes consistent glyph width across weights and includes features such as tabular figures, a broad range of diacritics, and multilingual support across Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek scripts.

Development and release: Miratype was conceived by typographer Lila Novak and a collaborative team in 2019–2020. The initial release, version 1.0, arrived in 2020 on GitHub, with subsequent updates adding weights, optical sizes, and language coverage. The project relies on community contributions and accepts pull requests from users and designers.

Usage and reception: Miratype has been adopted by universities, government portals, and non-profit organizations seeking accessible typography. It is praised for its legibility and stable rendering across devices, though some designers note that its geometric stance can feel restrained in certain branding contexts.
