Mineworkers are laborers who extract minerals, ores, or other geological resources from the earth through surface or underground operations. Their tasks include drilling, blasting, loading, and unloading material, operating heavy machinery, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. The profession spans diverse industries such as coal mining, metallic mining (including gold, copper, and iron), non‑metallic mining (such as limestone and phosphate), and diamond mining.

Historical development of mining has evolved from manual labor to mechanized processes, improving productivity but also changing occupational hazards. Early mineworkers faced severe risks from backfilling, falling rock, and lack of ventilation, leading to high rates of accidents and fatalities. Modern mines employ advanced ventilation systems, remote monitoring, and automation to reduce hazards, though risks such as underground fire, gas explosions, and dust inhalation (particularly silica dust) remain significant concerns.

In many developed nations, mineworkers receive collective bargaining representation through trade unions, which negotiate wages, working hours, and safety provisions. In some developing regions, informal or artisanal mining remains prevalent, often lacking adequate protection, leading to overexposure to health risks, especially silica-induced pneumoconiosis and variable compensation.
