Mineralgläsern

Mineralgläsern, often translated as mineral glass, refers to a type of glass commonly used in watchmaking for the crystal that protects the dial. Unlike sapphire crystal, which is a synthetic gemstone, mineral glass is a more traditional and cost-effective material. It is typically made from tempered glass, meaning it has been subjected to a controlled heating and cooling process to increase its scratch resistance and durability.

While mineral glass is more robust than acrylic or plastic crystals, it is generally less scratch-resistant than sapphire crystal. It can be scratched by harder materials, though its tempered nature helps prevent shattering. Mineral glass is also susceptible to showing smudges and fingerprints, which can be a minor inconvenience for some watch owners.

Despite its limitations, mineral glass remains a popular choice for watch manufacturers due to its affordability and reasonable durability. It is often found in entry-level to mid-range timepieces. The ability to temper mineral glass makes it a viable option for watches that are expected to withstand some daily wear and tear without the higher cost associated with sapphire. In some cases, mineral glass may be coated with anti-reflective layers to improve legibility, although this is more common with sapphire crystals.
