Mikrokontroller, often shortened to MCU, are small, self-contained computers on a single integrated circuit. They contain a processor core, memory, and programmable input/output peripherals. Their primary purpose is to control devices and systems.

The core of a microcontroller is its central processing unit (CPU), which executes instructions from memory. The memory typically includes both program memory (like Flash or ROM) to store the code and data memory (like RAM) for temporary storage. Input/output (I/O) pins allow the microcontroller to interact with the external world, receiving data from sensors or sending commands to actuators. These peripherals can include timers, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), digital-to-analog converters (DACs), and communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, and I2C.

Microcontrollers are ubiquitous in modern technology, powering everything from household appliances and automotive systems to industrial automation and consumer electronics. Their low cost, small size, and low power consumption make them ideal for dedicated control tasks where a full-fledged computer would be overkill or impractical. Development for microcontrollers typically involves writing software in languages like C or assembly and then compiling it for the specific microcontroller architecture. Debugging and testing are crucial steps in the embedded development process.
