Migrimet

Migrimet is a proposed quantitative index used in movement ecology to quantify the migratory propensity of animals. The term blends migration and metric and is designed to integrate multiple aspects of migratory behavior, including distance traveled, timing relative to seasonal calendars, and fidelity to recognized migratory routes.

The index is constructed from several subcomponents that are normalized to a common scale, typically 0 to 1. Common components include the Migratory Distance Score (MDS), which reflects the extent of seasonal displacement; the Temporal Alignment Score (TAS), which evaluates how closely migration aligns with optimal phenological windows; and the Route Fidelity Score (RFS), which captures consistency in route choice across seasons and years. A weighted sum combines these components into the overall migrimet, with weights chosen to emphasize the ecological questions at hand. Some applications also incorporate stopover duration, habitat connectivity, or environmental cues as supplementary factors.

Data used to estimate migrimet come from various tracking modalities, including light-level geolocation, GPS telemetry, and stabilizing isotope analyses, supplemented by observational records. Analyses typically require longitudinal data spanning at least one annual cycle and careful control for tagging bias, detection probability, and differential survival among tagged individuals.

Applications of migrimet include comparing migratory behavior across populations or species, assessing responses to climate change, habitat fragmentation, or shifting resource phenology, and informing conservation planning by identifying populations with high migrimet values that may merit international or cross-border management.

Limitations include sensitivity to data quality and sampling effort, species-specific movement patterns, and the lack of universal interpretive thresholds. As an index, migrimet infers migratory tendency rather than directly measuring fitness or reproductive success, and interpretations should be grounded in ecological context.
