Microprosody refers to the subtle, often unconscious variations in speech prosody—such as pitch, rhythm, and loudness—that convey nuanced emotional, social, or attitudinal information. Unlike macroprosody, which involves broader, more overt changes in intonation or stress, microprosody operates at a finer scale, influencing how listeners perceive intent, sincerity, or even deception in communication. These micro-level variations can be critical in understanding sarcasm, hesitation, or emotional subtleties that might otherwise go unnoticed in spoken language.

Research in microprosody has shown that even minor fluctuations in vocal tone, such as slight pitch drops or pauses, can signal uncertainty, irony, or deception. For example, a speaker might use a downward inflection at the end of a statement to imply skepticism, even if the words themselves are neutral.
