Miata

The Miata, or Mazda MX-5 Miata, is a lightweight two-seat roadster produced by Mazda. Introduced in 1989, it was designed to be affordable and fun to drive, reviving the classic small sports car concept. The car is known simply as Miata in the United States and MX-5 in most other markets.

The MX-5 uses a front mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Its design emphasizes a low center of gravity and near 50:50 weight distribution, contributing to agile handling. The car typically offers a manual transmission, with an automatic option in some markets.

NA (1989–1997) launched with 1.6- and 1.8-liter engines. The NB (1998–2005) refined styling and powertrains. The NC (2005–2015) grew in size and offered a retractable hardtop in some variants. The current ND (2015–present) uses a lighter chassis, updated suspension, SkyActiv engines, and a choice of soft-top or RF hardtop.

The MX-5 is widely credited with popularizing modern compact roadsters and reasserting the appeal of rear-wheel-drive lightweight sports cars at accessible prices. It has achieved strong sales, a large enthusiast following, and a presence in road racing and track-day communities.
