MX5

The Mazda MX-5, also known as the Mazda MX-5 Miata in some markets, is a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive two-seat roadster. Introduced by Mazda in 1989, it was designed to revive the feel of classic 1960s British sports cars with modern reliability, low weight, and balanced handling.

Over four generations, the MX-5 has become renowned for its handling and simplicity. The first generation (NA; 1989–1997) offered 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter inline-four engines and featured pop-up headlights in many markets. The second generation (NB; 1998–2005) refined the styling and chassis and broadened the engine choices. The third generation (NC; 2005–2015) increased size and weight but expanded performance with a 2.0-liter engine and revised suspension, and introduced a retractable roof option in some markets. The fourth generation (ND; 2015–present) adopted Mazda's light-weight SkyActiv architecture, improved efficiency, and offered both 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter engines; a retractable hardtop variant known as the MX-5 RF was added during this generation.

All MX-5 models emphasize a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a near 50:50 weight distribution and a manual transmission commonly preferred by enthusiasts. The design prioritizes simplicity, driver engagement, and tunable handling; over the years it has commonly used lightweight components, and in the ND era introduced SkyActiv technology.

Produced primarily by Mazda at its Hofu Plant in Japan, the MX-5 has become one of the best-selling two-seat sports cars and a landmark model for Mazda.
