Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is a drivetrain configuration in which engine torque is transmitted to the rear wheels. In most designs, power travels from the engine through a transmission, a driveshaft, and a differential to the rear axle. The front wheels provide steering but do not receive drive torque. RWD is commonly used with front-mounted or transaxle layouts, and has historically been the standard layout for many passenger cars, sports cars, and light trucks.

Advantages include balanced weight distribution between front and rear axles, a simple and durable drivetrain, and favorable handling characteristics under power, because weight shifts to the rear during acceleration improving traction. Disadvantages include reduced traction on slippery surfaces due to a heavier front end and, in some layouts, limited interior packaging, as well as potential oversteer if the rear tires lose grip.

In practice, RWD is favored in performance-oriented vehicles and traditional luxury sedans, as well as some pickup trucks. It competes with FWD and AWD; in modern economy cars, FWD is more common for efficiency and space, while AWD variants exist for improved traction. Maintenance considerations include driveshafts and differentials requiring periodic service; alignment and tire wear can be more pronounced on RWD cars.

Notable examples include many classic and modern performance models (such as certain BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Ford Mustang, and Chevrolet Camaro) that use RWD, though many models now offer AWD options.
