They are distinct from retractable hardtops, which use solid panels rather than fabric.

Construction and materials vary by model but often include a fabric or vinyl canvas, a supporting frame of steel or aluminum, and a rear window made of plastic or glass. When retracted, the top may rest on a package deck or be stowed in a boot or trunk. Some modern softtops incorporate rigid or semi-rigid elements to improve structure when up, while still allowing folding functionality.

Operation ranges from manually operated cranks to fully powered, hydraulically or electrically actuated systems. Weather sealing relies on edge channels and seals around the windshield and doors; maintenance typically focuses on fabric care, seal condition, and window integrity.

Advantages of softtops include lower weight and cost, easier repair or replacement of fabric, and compact storage when retracted. Disadvantages include greater exposure to weather and noise, reduced security, and shorter exterior lifespan if frequently exposed to sun and abrasion.
