Metallbau is a branch of the construction and metalworking industry focused on design, fabrication, and installation of metal structures and components. It encompasses architectural metalwork, structural and mechanical systems, and decorative elements. Common materials include steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, as well as copper or brass for specialty applications. Projects can range from handrails and gates to load-bearing frames and curtain walls.

The work combines drafting and engineering with skilled fabrication and on-site assembly. Typical processes include cutting, bending, welding, bolting or riveting, and surface finishing such as galvanizing, powder coating, painting or anodizing. Modern Metallbau often employs computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), laser cutting and robotic welding.

Applications span architecture, building construction, industrial facilities, and infrastructure. Architectural metalwork covers façades, window and door systems, stairs, balustrades, and decorative elements.
