Metadataservices

A metadataservice is a software component that stores, manages, and provides access to metadata about data assets, services, or processes. Its primary purpose is to support data governance, data discovery, lineage, and impact analysis by offering a centralized, searchable, and auditable view of metadata across an organization. It often serves as the metadata layer within data management platforms and data catalogs.

Key capabilities include maintaining a metadata repository, modeling metadata across technical, business, and operational domains, and enabling indexing and fast search. A metadataservice typically tracks data lineage and provenance, showing how data flows between systems and how transformations affect datasets. It may also collect data quality metrics, policy constraints, access controls, and stewardship assignments, providing versioning and change history to support reproducibility and audit trails.

Architecture commonly involves connectors to a variety of data sources, data ingestion and crawling components, a metadata store (which may use relational, graph, or hybrid stores), and an API layer (REST or GraphQL) for programmatic access. The underlying data model typically includes entities such as datasets, tables or files, processes or jobs, and their attributes, with relationships that capture lineage, ownership, and dependencies.
