Merkintätekniikkaan, often translated as marking technology or marking techniques, refers to the diverse methods and processes used to apply permanent or semi-permanent marks on various materials. These marks serve a multitude of purposes, including identification, traceability, decoration, and functional indications. The choice of marking technique depends heavily on the material being marked, the desired permanence, the complexity of the mark, and production volume.

Common marking techniques include laser marking, which uses a laser beam to alter the surface of a material, creating a permanent, high-resolution mark. This method is versatile and can be applied to metals, plastics, and ceramics without direct contact. Another widely used method is dot peening, where a hardened stylus is used to indent the material surface, creating a series of dots that form alphanumeric characters or logos. This is often used for marking serial numbers and VINs on automotive parts.

Engraving, either by mechanical means or with a CNC machine, involves physically removing material to create a recessed mark. Etching, particularly chemical etching, uses a corrosive substance to remove material from a surface, often used for intricate designs or on sensitive materials. Inkjet printing, while sometimes less permanent, is a cost-effective method for applying text and images, especially on porous surfaces or for decorative purposes. Finally, stamping uses a die or punch to impress a design onto the material, typically for high-volume, simple markings. Each technique has its own advantages and disadvantages concerning speed, cost, environmental impact, and the quality of the final mark.
