Mediaservern

Mediaservern is a software system that stores, organizes, and serves digital media files to clients over a computer network. It provides a centralized library of audio, video, and image content and makes it possible to stream or access media on devices such as smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, computers, and set-top boxes. Mediaservern may run on a personal computer, a network-attached storage device, or a dedicated appliance, and is commonly used in home entertainment setups as well as small offices.

Core features include library management with metadata extraction, automatic artwork and episode information, and search and filtering tools. The server exposes media through client-friendly interfaces and supports various streaming and discovery protocols, including DLNA/UPnP, HTTP streaming (HLS, DASH), and direct file serving. Many implementations offer on-the-fly transcoding to adapt video and audio to the device’s capabilities, bandwidth conditions, and licensing restrictions, as well as offline access and offline transcoding.

Architecturally, a mediaserver typically comprises a storage backend, a media database or index, a media-processing or transcoding engine, and a network service that accepts client connections. It often supports user accounts, access control, and remote access, with plugins or extensions to integrate with metadata sources such as TheTVDB, TMDb, MusicBrainz, or Discogs.

Common use cases include watching films and TV shows, listening to music, viewing photo collections, and sharing media across multiple rooms. Open-source projects (for example, Jellyfin) and commercial solutions (for example, Plex or Emby) illustrate the range of available options.
