They help ensure that chosen materials meet regulatory and industry standards and align with product goals and lifecycle considerations.

Typical duties include selecting materials and writing specifications, planning and interpreting mechanical, thermal, chemical, and nondestructive tests, and conducting failure analyses to determine root causes. They propose design changes, validate material choices through testing and characterization, and document results for quality, safety, and compliance. Material experts work across sectors such as construction, automotive, aerospace, electronics, energy, and healthcare, often within research and development, quality assurance, procurement, or consulting teams.

Education and training commonly feature degrees in materials science, metallurgy, chemistry, physics, or mechanical engineering, with specialization in metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, or coatings. Professional certifications and continuing education are typical complements. Practitioners employ tooling such as material databases, microscopy and spectroscopy, mechanical testing equipment, and non-destructive testing methods, as well as simulation software and life-cycle assessment tools to support decision-making.

In recent years, the role has expanded to emphasize sustainability, recyclability, lightweight design, additive manufacturing, and advanced coatings, aiming to improve performance while reducing environmental impact.
