Mastposition

Mastposition is a term used in naval architecture and sailing to describe the planned location of a vessel’s mast on the hull. It encompasses the fore-aft placement along the length of the boat, the vertical height of the mast above the deck or keel, and the rake or tilt of the mast. The concept applies to both deck-stepped and keel-stepped masts and is relevant for single-masted and multi-masted configurations.

The mast position influences several aspects of a vessel’s performance and handling. The longitudinal location affects the balance between the center of effort of the sails and the vessel’s center of gravity, impacting weather helm, trimming, and hull efficiency. The vertical height determines sail area and upwind performance, as well as the height of rigging loads.
